Harald Jerichau opholder sig i Rom sammen med sin bror Thorald. Brevet er stilet både til hans søster, Agnete (Caroline), og til moderens sekretær, Augusta Rudmose. Til Agnete skriver han, at han ikke forstår, hvorfor Augusta tilsyneladende er vred på ham, og beder hende forklare sagen. Han fortæller, at Thorald trives i Rom, arbejder flittigt med klaveret og besøger kendte komponister samt engelske og amerikanske kredse. Harald videresender også et brev fra moderen, Elisabeth Jerichau Baumann, som opholder sig i Konstantinopel (nutidens Istanbul). Til Augusta Rudmose takker han for 500 franc, som brødrene virkelig havde brug for. Han glæder sig over nyt om faderen, Jens Adolf Jerichau, og håber, at kærligheden til kunsten igen vil vågne hos ham. Augusta har øjensynligt frarådet Haral at skrive til faderen om sine fremtidsplaner med Marie. Harald forklarer åbent sine følelser for sin kusine, Marie Kutzner, som han beskriver som dygtig, arbejdsom og talentfuld. Han fortæller, at de korresponderer på engelsk, og beder derfor Augusta sende en engelsk ordbog.

I have got a few says ago a dear letter from mother in Constantinopel, and to day too one wich she has asked me to send you but recommendated, and now good by dearest Caroline and all dear sisters, excuse the uninteresting short letter, at least I hav shown my good will and shall leave leave letters of discription to Thorald if he can find the time. your

I have to day ben at the post and feched the recomandated letter with the 500 Francs, many thanks that you have send it to us immediately. for we needed it indead. How glad am I about what you have told me of father. I hoop too that fine days must come to him, and that the low to his art must awake again in his heart.
